PPE is the last barrier once everything else has failed, but on site it turns into a formality: the helmet without its chin strap, the glasses in a pocket because “they fog up”, the harness nobody has inspected since it arrived. The lowest-ranking worker is the most exposed and the quickest to get used to going without what they should be wearing.
The daily PPE check forces you to look at equipment by equipment, worker by worker, before the day starts. It is not only about having it, but about it being in good condition and worn properly. And it leaves the record that backs the company up with the workers’ compensation insurer: after an accident, being able to show that PPE was issued, inspected and compliant changes the investigation completely.
