A hazardous area is any zone where an explosive atmosphere can form from hydrocarbon gases or vapours: wellheads, tank farms, process plants, compression stations and loading racks. In these zones, protection depends on every piece of electrical equipment being explosion-protected (Ex) and on no ignition source entering uncontrolled. The problem is that these conditions degrade on their own over time.
A loose cable gland, a cover missing bolts, an uncalibrated gas detector or a minor leak nobody reported turn a theoretically safe zone into a real risk. Routine hazardous area inspection exists to catch those deviations before they coincide with a leak and a spark. It is a check that rarely finds anything dramatic, but when it does, it prevents the worst.
