Container inspection checklist

Containers are the most battered asset in the operation: they get stolen, burnt, their wheels break, leachate builds up in the bottom. Without routine inspection, deterioration is found late — usually through a resident complaint or because the truck cannot empty a unit with a jammed lid — and replacement costs more than timely maintenance.

A container in poor condition is also a health and safety problem. Without a lid it attracts vermin and generates odours; with sharp edges it injures the crew; overfilled, it forces people to handle loose waste. Inspecting condition, cleanliness and capacity lets you prioritise washing, repairs and replacements before they become an emergency.

For whoever manages the contract or the concession, the container inventory is also a commitment: you need to know how many there are, where they are and in what condition. A photographed, dated record sustains that inventory and backs up replacement requests to the client.
