Documentation control is what stops a trip being halted at a police or transport authority checkpoint over an expired document. In transport, driving with a lapsed roadworthiness certificate, expired insurance or the wrong licence class means a fine, the vehicle being held and, often, a service not delivered. All of it is prevented by checking dates before departure.
The real problem is that expiry dates are scattered: the licence expires on one date, the permit on another, the roadworthiness test on another, and nobody has the full picture per vehicle. By the time inspectors turn up, it is too late. A routine documentation check records what is valid and what is about to expire, before it becomes a problem on the road.
