PPE and safety control checklist

Waste collection and street cleaning are among the occupations with the most serious accidents: crew members struck by vehicles during collection, falls from the footboard, cuts from glass or sharps hidden in bags, contact with leachate and biological risk. Most of these accidents are preventable, but they happen anyway because PPE and condition checks are done verbally and never recorded.

A routine PPE and safety check forces you to look at what gets normalised: the operator working without cut-resistant gloves “because they are uncomfortable”, the reversing alarm that stopped sounding, the crew member riding the footboard at speed. Marking every point as conforming or not, with a photo, turns prevention into something verifiable instead of a poster on the wall.

There is a legal backing to this too: occupational health and safety law and the employer’s duty of care require issuing PPE, training people and keeping records (risk briefings, toolbox talks, equipment issue). When an accident happens and the insurer or the labour authority arrives, being able to show that conditions were monitored and that PPE was issued and worn is what separates an inspection from a penalty.
