Power transformer maintenance is what separates an asset that lasts 30 years from a catastrophic failure. A transformer is expensive, has long replacement lead times and, when it fails, can catch fire or leave a whole area without supply. Most of those failures give warning long in advance: dissolved gases in the oil, a bushing starting to run hot, silica gel saturated by ingress moisture.
The problem is not technical, it is one of record-keeping. Trends — temperature, oil analysis, tap changer operations — are only useful if they are captured over time. When each maintenance job is noted on a loose sheet, there is no history to anticipate the failure, and no evidence to back up the asset’s condition in an audit or an insurance claim.
This checklist covers the full cycle: safe de-energisation, oil, insulation, cooling, tap changer and protective devices, with close-out and traceability.
