The electrical work permit is the document that authorises work on an installation and, above all, the one that enforces the 5 golden rules: effective disconnection, locking out against reconnection, verification that the circuit is dead, earthing and short-circuiting, and signposting the area. Skipping a single one of these rules is the cause of most electrocutions and arc flash accidents in the sector.
The risk is not that people do not know the rules — it is that under time pressure they get carried out verbally and without verification. A lock removed by mistake, an earthing connection forgotten, re-energisation without coordinating with the control centre: these are process failures, not knowledge failures. And when there is no permit signed step by step, there is no way to guarantee every rule was met, nor who authorised re-energising.
